There is no doubt the society has embraced technological advancements. Children these days know how to use mobile phones and other gadgets as early as two years old. A report shows that kids under 9 years old spend more than two hours daily on digital screens.
Knowing how to use technology may have some advantages for your kids. You can find or install numerous educational apps, which your children can learn from. But keep in mind that too much exposure to mobile phones and other gadgets may have a negative effect on their physical and mental health.
As parents, you should monitor your children’s usage of gadgets and mobile phones. Here are some encouraging outdoor activities that will let your kids take a break from their screens:
1. Off-Road Cycling or Mountain Biking
Recommended age: From 6 to 9 years old. You may also use a trailer, support wheels, or a tag-along bike for younger kids.
This activity is a good start to encourage your children to put down their phones or tablets and enjoy the outdoors. It is also good for their health; they can feel more involved and get a sense of achievement. At first, you can take them on a short journey or simply visit their favorite parks or other destinations. As they start improving, you can go to more challenging routes with obstacles. Make sure they have safety gear and you are carrying a first aid kit.
2. Camping Trip
Recommended age: From 4 years old to teenagers.
A camping trip is one of the best ways to spend quality time with your family. Let your children experience the beauty and simplicity of nature. Prepare some activities to keep them busy. You can assign them chores, such as collecting wood for the bonfire, preparing the meals, and setting up the tent.
Take a walk from the woods to educate them about the different plants or animals you discover. Don’t forget to bring a survival kit, which includes flashlights, compass, emergency whistles, safety matches, first-aid kit, camping knife, and water bottle. 3. Beach Trip and Watersports

Just simply going to the beach with your family will make the kids lay low from the digital world and video games. Let them play in the sand and get some vitamin D. You can build sand castles or simply go for a walk on the beach. If you’re looking for more fun activities, let them try some water sports, such as kayaking, sailing, surfing, or jet skiing.
There are many other activities you can try to encourage your children to enjoy the great outdoors. You should also remember that your habits at home could also affect them. If they always see you on the phone or using the computer, they will likely do the same, so be a good role model.
